Thousands turn downtown Dallas pink for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk
Thousands of people dressed in pink filled Klyde Warren Park in downtown Dallas Saturday morning for the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk.
The annual event brought breast cancer survivors, caregivers, families and supporters together for a 5K walk aimed at raising money and awareness in the fight against breast cancer.
NBC 5 and Telemundo 39 sponsored the Oct. 31 event.
NBC 5 reporter Alanna Quillen emceed the walk, welcoming participants and sharing her own personal connection to the cause through her mother’s journey battling breast cancer.
The event marked the 16th year of the North Texas walk.
Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a nationwide fundraising movement benefiting the American Cancer Society. Money raised through the event supports cancer research, as well as education, prevention efforts and support for patients and caregivers.
According to the American Cancer Society, the organization has spent more than 110 years working to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research and patient support. The nonprofit’s work has contributed to a 42% decline in the death rate from breast cancer since 1989, saving nearly 500,000 lives.
While Saturday’s walk offered a chance to celebrate survivors and support people currently facing breast cancer, organizers said the event also serves as a way for people across the community to join together in solidarity with patients and caregivers.
Every dollar raised through Making Strides benefits the American Cancer Society.
