Boater killed after vessel capsizes near Del Mar Jetty
One person died and another suffered minor injuries after a vessel overturned near the Del Mar Jetty, authorities said Saturday.
Shortly before 7 p.m. Friday, lifeguards and the Oceanside Fire Department were informed about the overturned watercraft via a 911 call from a person who was on board but able to reach the jetty, according to the fire department.
First responders confirmed that one person remained missing in the water, the department said.
Lifeguards and firefighters began a search-and-rescue operation, and at 7:13 p.m., they “located the missing individual in the water, where the vessel struck the rocks on the Del Mar Jetty” and brought the victim onto a rescue boat, the OFD added.
The crew started CPR on the victim, who was then brought to shore and taken to Tri-City Medical Center.
“Despite extensive rescue and resuscitation efforts, the victim was pronounced (dead) at the hospital,” the OFD said.
The surviving victim was also taken to Tri-City for further evaluation.
Authorities are investigating what caused the vessel to capsize.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office, Oceanside Police Department, state and Carlsbad lifeguards and personnel from Camp Pendleton also assisted in the rescue effort, according to the OFD.
