PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- A 37-year-old man was critically wounded in a shooting following an argument after a minor vehicle collision in Southwest Philadelphia on Saturday night.
Officers from the 18th District responded shortly after 6 p.m. to reports of a person with a gun and a shooting near 57th Street and Woodland Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a 37-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds on the 2100 block of South 57th Street.
The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where he remained in critical condition, police said. Investigators said he suffered multiple gunshot wounds fired from close range.
According to preliminary information, the victim had been sitting in the passenger seat of a parked white Jeep while a woman was in the driver's seat. Police said the driver of a gray Pontiac that was parked in front of the Jeep struck the Jeep's front end while backing up.
The passenger exited the Jeep and confronted the Pontiac's driver. During the ensuing argument, the Pontiac driver allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the man multiple times before fleeing the scene, police said.
Responding officers quickly gathered information from the scene, including a description of the suspect's vehicle and a possible identification of the shooter. Officers located the vehicle a short time later and took the suspect into custody without incident, authorities said.
Police said the suspect was known to law enforcement from previous arrests and had identifiable physical characteristics that helped officers quickly locate and identify him.
Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from the argument that followed the collision. It was not immediately clear whether the victim and suspect knew each other before the encounter.
No charges were immediately announced, and the investigation remains ongoing.
