UNLV defense remains a Jekyll-and-Hyde unit with 4 games left

Defense wins championships.

Which is why the chaotic ebbs and flows of the UNLV football program through the first nine weeks of the 2026 season have made it difficult to determine where the Rebels stand defensively with four regular-season games remaining.

There have been matchups in which the UNLV defense has shown it is capable of playing at the level necessary to help the program claim its first conference championship. Then there have been games in which struggles on the back end have played a role in the Rebels’ setbacks.

That contrast was on full display on Saturday against the winless Northern Illinois Huskies in UNLV’s 31-24 victory, the Rebels’ fifth win of Dan Mullen’s second season at the helm.

The first half was a back-and-forth track meet, with the two teams combining for 41 points and 529 yards. UNLV carried a 24-17 lead into halftime despite allowing seven plays of more than 15 yards in the opening two quarters.

Northern Illinois finished with 10 rushing plays of more than 10 yards and five passing plays of more than 15 yards, totaling 316 yards on 15 explosive plays.

The second half, however, looked almost entirely different.

In a Jekyll-and-Hyde performance, the UNLV defense allowed 264 yards after halftime but limited the Huskies to seven points. Defensive back Mumu Bin-Wahad also came up with UNLV’s only takeaway of the game, forcing a turnover inside the Rebels’ 20-yard line.

The second-half performance was reminiscent of UNLV’s wins over North Dakota State and Hawaii.

Across those two games, the Rebels allowed a combined 13 points over eight quarters and held both opponents below 300 yards, marking the only time this season they have accomplished that feat.

For Mullen, despite the inconsistencies throughout the game, the defense made the plays it needed to help the team secure the win.

“I think one thing is that we play really well as a team,” Mullen said. “We understand that the defense knows when they need to get a stop, even if they’re not playing at a high level.

“Those are the plays and those are the things that guys make that are winning football plays, and it is guys stepping up to go and make that happen.”

The inconsistency, however, remains difficult to overlook. UNLV has allowed more than 400 yards in five games this season, including a combined 941 yards in the Rebels’ past two outings. Northern Illinois alone accounted for a season-high 493 yards Saturday.

Mullen acknowledged that the defense needs to perform at a higher level but pointed to injuries as another factor affecting the unit’s production.

“We have had a lot of injuries on the defensive side of the ball,” Mullen said. “We’re down a bunch of players and have some guys out that when you put a plan together in the offseason you’re expecting to have that we don’t have playing for us right now.

“But, we’ve got to be better. Am I pleased with how we played defensively? No. I don’t think we played very well defensively in the first half for sure and I don’t know if we played great in the second half. But I think we made some stops and some plays that we needed to make.”
