Birmingham Police Chief Michael Pickett said most of the game’s attendees and families had left the stadium after the game ended but shots rang out where vendors were set up along Graymont Avenue.
A spokesman for the police department told the Associated Press and other reporters that one person was detained for questioning and that multiple weapons were found and secured after the mass shooting.
That individual was not identified to the public, as of Sunday morning. Police have not yet identified a suspect or suspects for the shooting, nor has the deceased victim been identified.

The spokesman said of the eight victims who were injured, one was in critical condition and the other seven were stable.
Due to the shooting, the Birmingham Police Department said all Magic City Classic tailgating activities were suspended.
After the shooting, Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said the community was “hurt, shaken and rightfully angry. So am I. There is no argument, no beef, no misunderstanding that can justify this level of senseless violence during a night of celebration” in a statement on social media.
The community is being encouraged to share information and any potential videos or photos of the incident with police to assist in the investigation.
