Mass General Brigham recently announced layoffs

Mass General Brigham, the state's largest healthcare system, says it is laying off employees for the second time in the past two years as they look to strengthen their long-term financial sustainability.

A spokesperson for the healthcare system told The Boston Globe the layoffs began last week. They didn't say how many jobs are being eliminated but said pediatricians at Mass Eye and Ear were among those impacted.

“To strengthen our long-term financial sustainability, Mass General Brigham is continuing to make changes in how we operate," Mass General Brigham said in a statement. "While previous actions helped improve our financial position, our operating performance still requires broader structural changes. To strengthen our long-term sustainability, we must improve coordination across our hospitals and care settings, accelerating our transition to a more integrated model of care."

The healthcare system's operating margin has shrunk to 0.3%, and the company said it needs to target a 1.5% margin to be a healthy organization.

"These are difficult but necessary decisions to ensure we can continue providing exceptional care for patients, advancing research and education, and investing in the people and programs that are central to our mission," they said. "This work will be guided by our clinicians who are closest to patient care. By taking these steps now, we are strengthening Mass General Brigham for the future and ensuring we can continue to serve our patients and communities for generations to come.”

Mass General Brigham employs over 80,000 workers and includes Massachusetts General Hospital, Brigham and Women's Hospital and more than a dozen smaller hospitals, including Mass Eye and Ear and McLean Hospital.

The company previously conducted two rounds of layoffs in 2025 in an effort to get ahead of a projected $250 million budget gap.
