Delaware State defeats Norfolk State as One Philly HBCU Week celebrates Black excellence
PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Lincoln Financial Field transformed into a celebration of Black excellence, culture, and tradition Saturday as Delaware State and Norfolk State universities faced off in a football showdown marking the culmination of Mayor Cherelle Parker's One Philly HBCU Week.
The weeklong initiative, organized by the mayor's office, highlighted historically Black colleges and universities through a series of events celebrating their impact, traditions, and contributions to the community.
The festivities continued into the weekend, bringing generations of HBCU alumni, students and members of the Divine Nine together in South Philadelphia.
Before kickoff, fans gathered outside Lincoln Financial Field for tailgating, fellowship, and celebrations of HBCU pride.
For many in attendance, the event represented an opportunity to shine a spotlight on institutions that have historically played a significant role in educating and empowering Black communities.
"I feel like its's really important, because we don't get a lot of recognition, we are a small HBCU in Delaware. Delaware is the first state," said El Hadji Mbaye, Mister Senior at Delaware State University.
The matchup also featured two familiar faces to Philadelphia Eagles fans. Former Eagles stars Michael Vick and DeSean Jackson returned to the team's home stadium, this time as opposing head coaches.
Vick leads Norfolk State, while Jackson serves as head coach at Delaware State.
Former Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham was also among those celebrating the occasion.
"It's great that we are all now recognizing HBCUs even more getting that exposure with Vick and DJack being on the team it's driving more people to learn about HBCUs," Graham said.
While the football rivalry brought excitement to the field, attendees emphasized that the celebration extended far beyond the game.
"HBCUs allow you to understand not just who you are but where you come from. It's a great community," said Edward Franklin, a Lincoln University alumnus.
The gathering also served as a reminder of the connections formed through HBCUs and the importance of preserving their traditions for future generations.
Master Brown, a Delaware State University alumnus, reflected on the lasting impact of his college experience.
"HBCUs are pivotal, I believe. I'm a product of an HBCU and I love what my HBCU did for me," Brown said.
The game remained tied until the final seconds, with Delaware State securing a 36-33 victory over Norfolk State.
