The Georgia Department of Natural Resources says deer are more active during breeding season, which runs from October through late December, depending on the location.
Deer are especially active around dawn and dusk, which can overlap with morning and evening commutes as daylight saving time ends.
Officials say drivers should slow down, stay alert and watch for more deer if one crosses the road. Deer often travel in groups, and others may follow.
If a deer is near the road, drivers should be prepared to stop. If a collision is unavoidable, officials advise braking firmly and staying in the lane rather than swerving, which could cause a crash or loss of control.
Drivers can use Georgia’s deer rut map to check when deer movement is expected to peak in their area.
