Two dead, over a dozen wounded in violent weekend around Jacksonville including man shot by police
Two people were killed and at least 11 others were injured in separate shootings at Halloween parties in Jacksonville over the weekend. Police also investigated a fatal shooting on the Eastside and an officer-involved shooting near River City Marketplace.
The two fatal party shootings took place hours apart early Sunday morning on Arlington Expressway and in Durkeeville. Detectives with the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office have not identified the shooters in either incident and are seeking witness cooperation and video evidence.
The first Halloween party shooting occurred around 1:42 a.m. Sunday in the 6200 block of Arlington Expressway. Investigators said a dispute broke out among people waiting in line to enter a party before gunfire erupted. A 17-year-old girl was killed and two other people were wounded and taken to a hospital, police said.
JSO Commander Jacob Vorpahl said at least two shooters were reportedly wearing dark clothing. “It appears that all three of the victims that were shot were unintended targets and not involved in the dispute,” Vorpahl said.
Just over 2 hours later, around 3:50 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a second party shooting near Wilcox and Fifth streets in Durkeeville. Police reported that a house party with approximately 200 people spilled into the street before multiple shots were fired. “There was an initial round of gunfire at the party somewhere on the street in the area and then very rapidly afterward there was another volley of gunfire, which we believe is where the majority of the people were shot,” Vorpahl said. A 20-year-old man was killed, a 15-year-old girl was among those injured, another victim remained in life-threatening condition and seven others were in stable condition.
Investigators said solving the Durkeeville shooting will require help from people who were there. “This one is going to be very dependent on people who are at the scene being willing to cooperate and give us information about what they saw and heard,” Vorpahl said, asking anyone with cellphone video or accounts to contact police.
Man shot by JSO officers
In a separate incident Sunday around 6 p.m. officers responded to an apartment complex near River City Marketplace after receiving reports of gunfire. While speaking with a woman who heard shots, officers heard six additional gunshots. A suspect stepped out from a dark area, ignored commands to stop and show his hands and walked up complex stairs to the second story, police said.
When the suspect pulled a gun from his right pocket and turned toward officers, two officers fired shots. The suspect was taken into custody, treated by medical personnel and transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. No officers were injured. Police did not release the name of the suspect.
Eastside shooting
Earlier Sunday at 5:30 p.m., officers were called to the 1500 block of East 27th Street on the Eastside. They located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound and emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. Homicide detectives and the State Attorney’s Office are investigating and police detained multiple people for questioning.
Northside shooting
Violence was also reported on Saturday. Around 9:48 p.m. Saturday, officers responded to the 6800 block of 103rd Street and found a man in his 40s with a gunshot wound to his leg; he was hospitalized in stable condition and multiple people were detained.
Atlantic Boulevard shooting
Earlier that morning at 4:00 a.m. Saturday, officers dispersing a large crowd on the 7200 block of Atlantic Boulevard heard a gunshot and found a woman in her 30s shot; she was transported to a hospital in stable condition. Suspects in both Saturday incidents remain unknown.
