How the new Charlotte curfew for minors could impact parents
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - Charlotte’s children now must be inside and out of pubic spaces after 10 p.m. every night and until 6 a.m. the next morning.
The pilot program took effect on November 1 and will last until August 2027.
While Charlotte Mecklenburg Police say warnings and education will come first as the curfew begins, repeated violations for children and parents would mean punishments for both.
“I think the overall reception for it has been positive from parents and citizens that want to see these kids safe and see our city safe,” said Sergeant JD Williams of CMPD.
Any parent who knowingly lets their child violate the curfew or doesn’t take steps to stop them from doing so could be charged with a misdemeanor.
They likely won’t be arrested, but will have a court date and could face a fine from $50 to $500 dollars.
Parents we spoke to agree with the measures.
“I think if it’s a repeated offense, something should be warranted at that point,” said Torrian, a father of a 17-year-old. “I don’t know what that should be, but I think there should be a consequence for the parents not making sure that their child is being held accountable for their behaviors in the community.”
As a mom of a teenager, I am responsible for her well-being,“ said Ana Torres, who has a 13-year-old. ”If you’re not there as a parent then you should be help responsible."
