EXCLUSIVE: James Talarico talks US Senate race, San Antonio roots and priorities ahead of Election Day
With Election Day approaching, Democratic U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico made his final push for votes in San Antonio Sunday evening at The Espee in St. Paul’s Square.
In an exclusive interview with KSAT 12’s Ernie Zuniga, Talarico reflected on more than a year of campaigning and his deep connection to San Antonio.
The former Rhodes Middle School teacher worked on the city’s West Side, an experience he says inspired his political career.
“This is where I learned how to be a leader. This is where I learned the meaning of service,” Talarico said. “San Antonio taught me so much about myself and about public service.”
Talarico said addressing the rising cost of living is among his top priorities. He supports suspending federal gasoline and diesel taxes and reversing tariffs he believes are driving up prices.
“People here in San Antonio are struggling with the high cost of living,” he said.
Education is another priority, particularly expanding access to quality early childhood programs.
Talarico also believes Texas would benefit from greater political competition.
“My party talks about turning Texas blue. Republicans talk about keeping Texas red. I think the best color for Texas is purple,” he said.
He emphasized the importance of bipartisan cooperation, pointing to legislation he helped pass while serving in the Texas House.
“I’m not interested in just serving Democrats. I’m interested in serving Democrats, independents, and Republicans,” Talarico said.
As the campaign winds down, Talarico is borrowing a familiar motto from “Friday Night Lights.”
“We’re running with clear eyes and full hearts,” he said.
NOTE: Ernie has reached out to the Ken Paxton campaign five times since Oct. 23 to request a one-on-one interview with Paxton. He has not received a response from the Paxton campaign.
