FRANKLINTON, N.C. (WBTV) - No threats “of any kind” were found after reports of an active shooter surfaced at a North Carolina school on Monday morning.
The Franklin County sheriff confirmed all students were safe at Franklinton High School following the earlier reports.
County emergency officials confirmed there was an investigation at the school shortly before 11 a.m. on Nov. 2. Within an hour, emergency officials said nothing had been found and there were no injuries.
Shortly after emergency officials confirmed the investigation, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said there was a “very large police presence” at the school. The state agency later said the active shooter report was believed to have been false.
Franklin County Schools likewise said the active shooter report was unfounded, and said there was no immediate threat.
“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority,” the district wrote in a statement Monday. “We appreciate the patience and understanding of our families and community as we work with law enforcement to address this situation. Parents have been informed of the dismissal procedures for today.”
The Franklin County sheriff said authorities would remain on campus for the rest of the day.
“False alarms like this are not funny, but unfortunately must be taken seriously,” the sheriff wrote on social media. “We will investigate the origination of this false report and the perpetrator will face significant consequences.”
Franklinton High School has more than 1,200 students enrolled, and sits about 45 minutes northeast of Raleigh.
