Today @ 10:30 a.m., SA Live celebrate Dia de Muertos

LA VIDA DE LOS MUERTOS CELEBRATION

Dia de Muertos anchored the first half of the show, starting with a look at the holiday’s basics: ofrendas built with photos, favorite foods, candles and marigolds, all in service of keeping memories of loved ones alive. The director of education at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center walked through this year’s community celebration, La Vida de los Muertos, at Plaza Guadalupe, 1327 Guadalupe St. It begins at 5 p.m. tonight and it is free and open to the public, with vendors, food, drink, music, dance and theater. Free workshops start at 5, including sugar skull decorating and paper flower making, and there is free pan de muerto while it lasts. The event is outdoors, so lawn chairs are welcome. This marks 30 years of the center hosting the celebration, which is sponsored by AARP San Antonio.

CULTURA CAMPAIGN

A taped feature visited Cultura Campaign, a San Antonio brand that began about seven years ago with large painted canvases and grew into stickers, earrings and a full storefront that now carries work from other micro entrepreneurs. The owner, a local artist, said the shop was shaped by growing up in her grandparents’ South Side restaurant and by a desire to build a space where community members see themselves in the product. Alongside her own art are bolo ties, curated clothing, vintage pieces and capes made with a family in Guatemala. The shop is at 100 Probandt in Southtown, on the Lotuna property, and has been open less than three months.

GRIMALDI’S FALL MENU FOOD DROP

The food drop brought in Grimaldi’s new fall menu, available now through Dec. 2. On the table: a buffalo chicken pizza with celery to cut the heat, a buffalo chicken salad, a pumpkin cheesecake and a caramel apple cheesecake built on a cinnamon sugar cookie crust with diced green apple and caramel sauce.

BOERNE HANDMADE MARKET

The Boerne Handmade Market returns for its 14th year, and a co-owner and organizer laid out a table’s worth of what shoppers will find: original art, plants and succulents, candles and fragrances, Texas pottery, kids’ play dough kits, hand-painted copper pieces, leather stockings, local honey, woodworking bowls and a wipes-and-diaper clutch that got the biggest reaction of the segment. Bernie ISD life skills groups from 11 campuses will set up Friday morning. Two VIP events run Friday, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 5:30 to 9 p.m., with tickets that include coupons, a swag bag, drink tickets and sweet treats. Saturday entry is $5, free for educators who show a badge and free for kids 12 and under. The market is also collecting toiletry donations for the Kendall County Women’s Shelter, with a needs list on its social media. The market runs Nov. 6 through 7 at 1910 Church.

MEDICARE ANNUAL ELECTION PERIOD

This segment was sponsored by HealthSpring. A sales director explained that the Medicare annual election period runs Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, the window to review current benefits, compare upcoming 2027 changes or switch to a new plan. She said some Medicare Advantage plans are designed to give back part of the Part B premium, and that plans can include a zero monthly premium, zero-copay primary care visits, low or no copays on many drugs, an over-the-counter allowance, a fitness program, dental, hearing and vision coverage and up to $300 in rewards for healthy activities. Her three tips: read the annual notice of change that arrives each September, weigh the extras original Medicare does not cover, and confirm that your doctors, hospitals and specialists are in the plan’s network.
