Multiple people injured in large party shooting in Iredell County: What we know
MOORESVILLE, N.C. (WBTV) - An event venue in Iredell County on Coddle Creek Highway has remnants of a party that turned into a crime scene on Halloween night after sheriff’s deputies say four people were shot during the gathering.
The Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says at least 30 shots were fired around 2 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1 and four people were injured. Three have left the hospital and one remains in stable condition.
None of the victims have been identified and no arrests have been made. But, deputies say there is no danger to the public.
Law enforcement says 200 to 300 people were in attendance and many of the party goers came from outside of Iredell County based on driver’s licenses collected at the scene.
Captain Julie Wyatt with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office says there were multiple online promoters of the event, which led to more people showing up than expected.
“We spoke with the owners and we are confident they had no clue how bit this was going to be. I think it hit social media and just spread like wildfire,” said Captain Wyatt. “A lot of [the evidence] is digital. We seized several phones and cameras so we’re still digging through that. We collected multiple shell casings and some live rounds. We took samples of the blood that we found there. We took several bottles to fingerprint.”
Captain Wyatt says they collected about 50 witness statements, but her deputies need more information from people who were at the party.
“Most of the people said that they only heard the shooting they didn’t see it. So we don’t have an idea of what led up to it,” she said.
“It was kind of crazy,” said a woman who rents a home from the owners of the barn on the same property. She did not want to be identified.
“It’s very unusual. This is a very nice property,” she said. “Wonderful events at the barn, weddings, birthdays. Wonderful, very positive, very nice people.”
Empty alcohol bottles, food containers, clothes and dozens of chairs are yet to be cleaned up from the party.
The woman tells WBTV she didn’t hear the shooting or any of the party since she was asleep. She first learned about the incident when a Mooresville Police officer came to her door.
“He told us there was an active shooter and that we needed to lock the windows, lock the doors and stay inside,” said the woman, who says the shooting doesn’t make her want to end her lease.
Down Coddle Creek Highway, Patty, who has lived in the area for years says she’s never seen anything like this before at the venue.
“Cars were lined up the highway, in the field and everything. It’s actually terrifying to know that many people were shooting,” she said. “We’re very concerned now. As you can see we have kids getting off the school bus. I have grandchildren here. This is a quiet place.”
