2026 midterm elections: Democrats projected to win enough seats to gain control of the House

Control of the Senate has not yet been projected.

ABC News projects that the Democrats will gain control of the Senate. The total number of seats they will gain is not yet known.

ABC News also projects Democrats will win enough seats to gain control of the House. Included in the calculation are several seats in later poll closing times that ABC News analysts believe will not affect the outcome.

Heading into Election Day, the Senate consisted of 53 Republicans, 45 Democrats and two independents. In the House of Representatives, there are 218 Republicans and 214 Democrats, in addition to one independent and two vacancies.
