Customers of utility companies could see higher electric bills under a proposal that would limit utilities' financial liability for wildfires, according to a report by the Los Angeles Times.
The newspaper reported that Pacific Gas & Electric Co. is seeking to cap financial liability for wildfire damages even in cases where the utility is found negligent.
Under the proposal, customers could be left paying more through their electric bills if a utility is found to have acted recklessly and wildfire-related costs exceed the liability cap.
Utility companies argue that such protections would help preserve credit ratings and support continued investment.
