Houston officials are considering increasing a fee paid by residential developers that helps fund park improvements across the city.
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston's long-struggling park system could be getting some improvements.
Since 2007, residential developers in the City of Houston have had to follow what's called the Open Space Ordinance.
It means that for every new house or apartment unit they build, developers must either set aside land or pay a one-time $700 fee to the city. The money goes toward improving parks in our area.
Houston City Council members are now considering raising the fee for developers from $700 to $900.
About 70% of the money from the fees collected stays in the area being developed, but 30% goes to a city-wide fund dedicated to fixing up the parks that need it most.
This proposal is scheduled for discussion at a planning commission meeting next Thursday. It could go to city council members for a vote before the end of the year.
