What to Know

  • California will choose a new governor to replace Gavin Newsom, who terms out after this year. The choices are Democrat Xavier Becerra and Republican Steve Hilton.
  • The balance of power in the U.S. House could be determined by several key races in California, including District 48 in part of San Diego. The outcomes will determine if the state's redistricting pays off for Democrats.
  • California voters are deciding on 14 statewide propositions, including the so-called Billionaire Tax, an affordable housing proposition and a voter ID measure.
  • All 80 California Assembly seats are up for reelection, as well as 20 Senate seats.
  • Mayoral races are being determined in the cities of Carlsbad, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Encinitas, Escondido, Imperial Beach, National City, Poway, San Marcos, Vista and La Mesa.
  • San Diego City Council races could shift the overall makeup of the city's representation further left.
