Byron Donalds wins historic election for Florida governor

Republican Byron Donalds won Florida’s race for governor Tuesday, defeating Democrat David Jolly and securing a historic victory as the state’s first Black governor-elect.

The race was close, with Donalds getting 50.1% of the vote compared to Jolly’s 48.7%. Key issues for voters included affordability and the cost of homeowners insurance.

Donalds thanked President Trump in his victory speech to supporters in South Florida. “I want you to hear from Florida that we are still red,” Donalds told the crowd. “Mr. President, I also want to tell you thank you for your support and thank you for being in my corner.”

Donalds will succeed outgoing Gov. Ron DeSantis, continuing the streak of Republican governors in the state. Florida hasn’t had a Democratic governor since 1999.
