New Mexico voters likely to support amendments on governor pocket veto, lawmaker pay
SANTA FE, N.M. – Voters appear set to approve two major constitutional changes, including requiring governors to act on vetoes and paying lawmakers about $68,000 a year.
The first amendment on the ballot looks set to pass and would change the governor’s ability to use a pocket veto.
A pocket veto lets the governor veto a bill without any reason or let the clock run out before signing it. If approved, the amendment would require the governor to take action or include a message on every bill the governor vetoes.
New Mexico lawmakers also will get paid for the first time in state history. That change remains controversial.
Lawmakers will be paid about $68,000 a year, based on the median household income for New Mexicans.
The constitutional changes mark a shift in how state government handles vetoes and legislative pay.
