ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — KOB 4 projects Democrat Deb Haaland to win New Mexico’s 2026 gubernatorial race.

As of 10:27 p.m., Haaland led 57% to 43% against Republican Gregg Hull, who conceded on Tuesday night.

Haaland is set to address supporters at the Route 66 Casino Hotel later tonight.

Attrition among Democratic leaning voters?

Though Haaland is projected to win, her support among Democratic leaning voters was not as robust as other Democrats in New Mexico. Haaland’s total votes lagged behind Democrats running in several other statewide races as seen in the numbers below.

How Haaland’s win compares to other governorship victories

In 2022, current Democratic Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham won with 370,168 votes. She won with just shy of 52% of the total vote.

In 2018, Lujan Grisham won with 398,368 votes. That was just over 57% of the total vote.

In 2014, former Republican Governor Susana Martinez won with 293,443 votes. That was also just over 57% of the vote. Deb Haaland was on the ticket as the running mate of Democratic Challenger Gary King at the time.

In 2010, Martinez won with 321,219 votes. That was just over 53% of the vote.

The last governor to win an election with an indisputable landslide was Democrat Bill Richardson in 2006 with 384,806 votes. That came out to nearly 69% of the vote.

Factoids about Deb Haaland’s win

  • Deb Haaland’s win marks the first time since 1982 that a major party in New Mexico has retained power in the governor’s mansion with consecutive governors. Toney Anaya, D-N.M, won the 1982 election after Democrat Bruce King’s administration.
  • New Mexico only allowed governors to serve back-to-back terms after 1986. Deb Haaland is the first candidate from a major party to keep the New Mexico governor’s mansion in the hands of that party after a previous governor served two back-to-back terms.
  • Deb Haaland is the first Native American woman to serve as a state governor in the United States.
  • Deb Haaland is New Mexico’s third consecutive female governor. All of New Mexico’s governors have been female since the first: Republican Susana Martinez.
  • Deb Haaland is the third consecutive Democratic governor of New Mexico to have previously served in congress. She is the second consecutive Democrat and second consecutive governor to have previously served as a congressional representative for New Mexico’s 1st District.
  • Deb Haaland directly succeeded Michelle Lujan Grisham when Lujan Grisham won her race for governor. Now Haaland will directly succeed Lujan Grisham again.
  • Since the beginning of the Donald Trump era of national politics (June 16, 2015), Democrats have won every statewide race in New Mexico except for the re-election of Supreme Court Justice Judith Nakamura in 2016.
