Bugarium reopens at Albuquerque BioPark

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Albuquerque BioPark’s Bugarium has reopened after a major renovation project funded by voters a decade ago.

Visitors were among the first to explore the redesigned exhibit on Election Day, including Albuquerque resident Karen Bentz and her grandson, Max.

“Oh yes, to see the wonder in his eyes,” Bentz said.

Bentz said the trip was especially meaningful after Max made a connection with another young visitor.

“He made a friend here. They’re both love bugs. Yeah, it is really special,” Bentz said.

Six-year-old Max Bentz and 8-year-old Julian spent part of their visit watching the Bugarium’s leaf-cutter ants at work.

When asked what the ants were doing, Max replied: “Making mushrooms.”

The renovated exhibit now allows visitors to watch leaf-cutter ants travel across the atrium to farm fungus they later eat.

“It’s really exciting that we’re in this moment right now where they’re in the spotlight, and bugs are rarely ever in the spotlight,” said Alex Miller, curator of entomology at the ABQ BioPark.

Miller said insects can offer lessons about slowing down and appreciating things that often go unnoticed.

“I think that bugs can teach us to slow down and appreciate the things that are usually overlooked. Like the reason I got so into spiders was because I slowed down and started observing them, and I really. That they’re actually really cool and they’re not trying to kill me, so don’t judge a book by the front cover,” Miller said.

The renovated Bugarium features new iridescent giant grasshoppers, as well as stick and leaf insects. The updated space is designed to feel light, airy and relaxing for visitors.

Miller said the reopening gives insects a rare opportunity to take center stage while helping visitors learn more about the creatures that often go overlooked.

The Bugarium is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
