Louisiana’s Scalise, Carter, Higgins and Johnson re-elected to new terms in U.S. House
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - Republican Steve Scalise and Democrat Troy Carter retained their seats in the U.S. House of Representatives with easy re-election victories Tuesday (Nov. 3).
Metairie’s Scalise was re-elected to his seat representing Louisiana’s 1st Congressional district with 61 percent support, easily outdistancing Democratic challenger Lauren Jewett (34 percent), Republican Randall Arrington (4 percent) and independent E. “Liddy” Glass (2 percent).
Scalise, 61, will be serving his 11th term in office after first being elected to Congress in 2008. He has served as House Majority Leader since 2023.
New Orleans’ Carter, 63, faced four challengers seeking his 2nd Congressional District seat. Carter won with 80 percent support, defeating Republican Peter Williams (15 percent), Libertarian Lisa Ballay (3 percent) and independents Walter “Rocky” Beach and Renada “Honey” Collins (1 percent each).
Carter has served in Congress since 2021, after defeating Karen Carter Peterson in a special election to finish the term of former Rep. Cedric Richmond. Richmond vacated the seat to take a senior advisor position for former President Joe Biden.
Republicans Clay Higgins and current House Speaker Mike Johnson also retained their seats in Louisiana’s 3rd and 4th congressional districts, respectively. Higgins won with 55 percent of the vote and Johnson with 58 percent in their districts.
The 5th district, which Senator-elect Julia Letlow has represented since her husband’s death in 2021, had nine candidates vying in the state’s delayed congressional primary. Democrat Patricia “Pat” Moore (with 18 percent) and Republican Gabe Firment (17 percent) advance to the Dec. 12 runoff election.
The 6th district, redrawn in May to favor Republicans, had a field of 10 candidates competing to replace Democratic Rep. Cleo Fields, who opted not to run within the new boundary.
Three candidates won approximately 19 percent of the vote each, but only Democrat Chauna Banks (50,878 votes) and Republican Blake Miguez (50,213) advance to the runoff, with Republican Rick Edmonds (49,241) missing out by 972 votes.
