Republican Kelly Ayotte wins reelection for governor in New Hampshire
It was a big night for Democrats, but we learned overnight that New Hampshire’s Republican Gov. Kelly Ayotte has won reelection.
Ayotte fended off a challenge from Democrat Cinde Warmington, a former state Executive Council member.
The race was too close to call late into the night. NBC News projected her narrow win over Warmington after midnight.
Ayotte finally took the stage to give her victory speech early Wednesday morning.
During her reelection campaign, Ayotte touted her efforts to speed up housing construction, tackle the cost of electric bills and reform the bail system.
On Tuesday night, before the race was called, Ayotte took the stage to thank her family and supporters.
“It has been a privilege and an honor to serve the people of New Hampshire over the last two years. We are going to wait for every single vote to be counted tonight,” she said.
We haven’t heard from Ayotte since, but Warmington, her opponent, did issue a statement Wednesday morning.
“From the very beginning, this campaign was about putting the needs of working families first and fighting for a future where they can actually get ahead,” Warmington said. “It’s the very same fight I brought to the Executive Council, where I fought for Granite Staters who have been left behind for far too long.”
“And while this isn’t the outcome that we were hoping for, I am so proud of the race we ran and the support we earned across the state. I’m proud that we fought for public education, housing, and health care. I’m proud that we fought against the corruption and self-dealing that has made its way to Concord from Washington. I’m proud that we fought for a more affordable New Hampshire.”
Warmington said in her statement that she called Ayotte to congratulate her on her victory, and hopes she will work collaboratively with the newly-elected Democratic majorities in New Hampshire’s House and Senate.
Elsewhere in New Hampshire, Democratic Congressman Chris Pappas won the Senate race, beating former Republican Sen. John Sununu, who was trying to make a political comeback.
The race to fill the seat being vacated by Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen was one of a handful that helped determine the balance of power in the U.S. Senate.
And in the race to fill Pappas’ vacant Congressional seat, Democrat Stefany Shaheen, Jeanne’s daughter, won. Democrat Maggie Goodlander also won reelection to her seat in Congress.
