Joliet man accused of gunning down Chicago woman at Hammond Ind. Walmart

The boyfriend of 21-year-old woman from Chicago who was killed during a shooting attack at a Hammond, Ind. Walmart, remains in custody Wednesday after being charged with her murder.

Dorian Kevon Robertson, 22, of Joliet, is being held at the Lake County Jail charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Dakota Norwood, 21, according to Hammond police Cpt. Steve Kellogg.

Investigators determined that Norwood and the suspect knew each other and had been involved in a relationship, Kellogg said. The exact nature and length of that relationship remains under investigation, according to Kellogg.

At approximately 9:09 a.m. Monday, Hammond police were called to the Walmart, 1100 S. 5th Ave., store after an off-duty Hammond police officer working store security reported that a shooting had erupted and a suspect was in custody, according to Kellogg.

Norwood was working at the store when a conversation with Robertson, who she'd been in a relationship with, escalated into a physical altercation, Kellogg said.

Robertson allegedly retrieved a firearm and shot Norwood multiple times.

Norwood, of Chicago, was pronounced dead at 10:27 a.m. Monday, according to the Lake County coroner's office. An autopsy determined Norwood died of multiple gunshot wounds and her death was ruled a homicide.
