Skate-O-Mania to stay open after warning of possible closure
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The owners of Skate-O-Mania in Albuquerque said they’re staying open after indicating they may be forced to close.
The owners said they faced closing by the end of the year over concerns about insurance. However, they said Tuesday on their social media that they secured insurance for the next year.
“We can’t express how much your support has meant to us,” they said. “When we shared that we would be closing, Albuquerque showed up. You called, shared our story, offered connections and reminded us how much this rink means to the community. Local news outlets spread the word and state senators reached out. Thanks to all of them and so many more, we were able to find an insurance provider.”
The owners said they have a year of coverage. They plan to use that year to work toward a “more lasting solution” that will keep them open “for decades to come.”
Skate-O-Mania opened in 1980 under the name “Roller King.” It has been known as a date night and hangout spot for generations of people in Albuquerque
Owner Courtney Ballew said 100,000 to 200,000 people visit Skate-O-Mania each year. It gained popularity as a backdrop in the Netflix series, “Stranger Things”.
