Could Kyle form in the Atlantic soon?
NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A broad low-pressure system developing along a stationary front in the Atlantic is drawing increased attention from the National Hurricane Center, which has raised the probability of tropical or subtropical development over the coming week.
The system is strengthening through a combination of favorable atmospheric conditions. A powerful jet stream positioned across the southern United States and into the Atlantic is providing dynamic lift, while exceptionally warm Atlantic waters are fueling organization.
These dual influences create the potential for subtropical storm development, which is a hybrid system that combines both tropical and non-tropical characteristics.
Should the system organize, it would be designated as Subtropical Storm Kyle.
The National Hurricane Center currently assigns a 30% chance of development within the next 48 hours and a 50% chance within the next seven days. The system poses no threat to land at this time.
The strong jet stream configuration is consistent with current El Niño conditions affecting the Atlantic basin. Until sea surface temperatures cool to seasonal norms, the atmospheric setup will continue to favor subtropical storm development in this region.
