Report: A’s hire Brewers executive as new general manager
The Athletics have hired Cam Castro, the Milwaukee Brewers’ senior vice president of player development, as their new general manager, multiple outlets reported Wednesday.
Castro will serve as the No. 2 baseball executive under newly hired president of baseball operations Taylor Smith.
The former college baseball coach has been with the Brewers since 2019 and is known for his work in pitching development. He played a key role in Milwaukee’s World Series championship last week.
Castro has been moved up from minor league pitching coordinator, director of pitching development and eventually vice president of player development. Under his oversight, the Brewers’ pitching staff posted a 1.98 ERA and 105 strikeouts over 118 innings in the postseason en route to the title.
He inherits an Athletics team that finished with the worst ERA in the majors at 5.43 last season and ranked 29th in WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) at 1.52. The A’s also blew 28 saves.
The team does have promising young relievers Hogan Harris, Luis Medina and Elvis Alvarado. They posted road ERAs of 2.06, 1.23 and 3.04, respectively, last season.
The Athletics plan to move to Las Vegas in 2028, when they are scheduled to begin play in a new ballpark on the Strip. They finished 64-98 in 2026, fourth in the American League West and 17 games behind the division champion Houston Astros.
The A’s have been searching for a general manager since David Forst agreed to part ways with the team, ending his 27-year tenure with the franchise. Assistant general manager Dan Feinstein has overseen baseball operations on an interim basis.
