Stout defeated Herrera early Wednesday. The Associated Press called the race at 12:05 a.m. Stout led Herrera by nearly 8 percentage points with 100% of precincts reporting.

The race opened up after Republican Tony Gonzales dropped his reelection bid and resigned from Congress amid a sex scandal with a staffer. Republicans had held a strong grip on the seat for the past decade.
