After rough stretch, Golden Knights penalty kill finding stride

Perception can change in 24 hours. This theory would include the Vegas Golden Knights and their penalty kill.

Normally reliant on their penalty kill, the Knights went through a stretch that was uncharacteristic, no matter how early in the season.

The Knights have responded with two penalty-killing clinics in their last two games — both coming within 24 hours — to reel off three of a possible four points to begin this four-game road trip.

Monday saw the Knights allow one goal on a five-minute major to limit the damage, rally from two goals down and earn a point in a shootout loss to Boston.

On Tuesday, the Knights were sent to the penalty box six times. The last two came 38 seconds apart from defensemen Brayden McNabb and Jeremy Lauzon — two of the team’s consistent penalty killers.

The Knights killed a five-on-three that lasted 1:22 to cap a 6-for-6 night shorthanded. That was the difference in their 3-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Coach Ryan Craig said the difference he’s seen is more aggressiveness.

“We got some timely saves, but our aggressiveness has been good,” Craig said. “We’ve been able to roll through some guys. We’ve been able to start with some clears early, which can put them back on their heels. Just good details on it.”

The Knights went six straight games giving up a power play goal from Oct. 15-27. They snapped that streak Friday against the New Jersey Devils, but New Jersey didn’t need power-play goals to dominate the Knights in a 5-2 result.

Craig had the team practice Saturday for 35 minutes before heading out east Sunday. They worked on details in all areas. Craig put a focus on attention to detail in defending, especially shorthanded.

Signs that it paid off appeared Monday. They went 3-for-4 on the kill with the lone goal coming 30 seconds into a five-minute major due to forward Braeden Bowman’s game misconduct for elbowing.

Craig felt they settled things down after that kill and got to their game. The Knights rallied back to earn a point.

“I think we really liked what we were doing,” forward Mitch Marner said. “It just seems like we just got to make one extra play, one extra clear and we’re good.”

Marner said the Knights pressured well. When they weren’t pressuring, they focused on taking away passing lanes.

Whenever there was a breakdown, the Knights got reliable goaltending. Monday was Carter Hart. Tuesday was Adin Hill standing tall while the Knights searched for offense.

The dam eventually broke in the third with Pittsburgh scoring twice and taking a 2-1 lead. But if it wasn’t for Hill making the saves he did, the Knights were staring at an 0-2 start on this road trip.

Center William Karlsson said the PK has become “a bit synchronized.”

“We’re reading each other,” Karlsson said. “When we got beat, we had ‘Hilly’ in net making huge saves. A little bit of skill and luck.”

The six-game stretch was a reminder that it’s an 84-game season and trends don’t last the whole tenure. Getting back to having a strong penalty kill, on a back-to-back, no less, was impressive.

As Karlsson simply put it, “It was just hockey.”

Simplicity that we can all strive for.
