Democratic gubernatorial nominee Doug Jones Wednesday conceded in Alabama’s gubernatorial race in what became the closest contest for that office since 2002.

In a statement Wednesday afternoon, Jones repeated that the objective of his campaign was not to win but to make gains across the state for Democrats. Democrats flipped four legislative districts in Madison and Shelby counties, and U.S. Rep. Shomari Figures, D-Montgomery, successfully fought a GOP attempt to gerrymander his district.

“While we came up short in this election, we accomplished so much together that I believe will bode well for Alabama in the future,” Jones said.

As of Wednesday at 12:18 p.m., Tuberville received 872,561 votes (51.8%), and Jones got 806,253 votes (47.9%), according to unofficial results. Tuberville declared victory Tuesday with less than 70% of ballots counted. The Associated Press had not made a call in the race at the time, and Jones declined to concede, citing outstanding ballots were in Democratic-leaning counties like Jefferson, Greene and Tuscaloosa.

A message seeking comment from the Tuberville campaign was sent Wednesday afternoon.

“But this campaign was never about me; it was always about giving the people of Alabama choices, fresh ideas, and hope for a better future. We brought new people into the political process and helped lay the groundwork for Democrats to compete in elections for years to come,” Jones said.

Tommy Tuberville wins Alabama governor’s race; Doug Jones does not concede

Ballots cast for Democratic candidates increased in all 67 counties on Tuesday, according to election data. Jones cited Figures’ win and broader improvements by Democratic candidates.

“Local candidates across Alabama either won their races or finished stronger than expected,” he said. “Those are big wins. In districts that some people had written off as unwinnable, Alabama voters proved otherwise.”

Jones congratulated Tuberville on his win and offered him support in the “tough issues ahead.” State officials have repeatedly warned state agencies that fiscal year 2028 will be “challenging” and budgets will need to be conservative. The state’s two public employee insurance boards are seeking more funding and increasing premiums or direct costs amid rising healthcare costs.

“The responsibility for Alabama’s future doesn’t rest with one person. It belongs to all of us. I encourage every Alabamian to stay involved, to hold our elected leaders accountable, and to make sure their voices are heard, not just on election day, but every day,” he said.
