Texas 2026 midterms: Gina Hinojosa and James Talarico celebrate historic win at Austin Whataburger

AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) -- Texas governor-elect Gina Hinojosa and Senator-elect James Talarico celebrated their big win Tuesday night at an Austin-area Whataburger restaurant, a video shows.

The video, shared by Hinojosa, showed the two elected officials sharing a booth with the celebratory sodas, surrounded by supporters.

On Tuesday, Hinojosa defeated incumbent Gov. Greg Abbott, who served the state for 12 years, becoming Texas's first Latina governor. She’s also the first Democrat to win the post in more than 30 years.

Hinojosa will be the third woman to hold the office of governor of Texas. The first was Miriam “Ma” Ferguson, who served from 1925 to 1927, then again from 1933 to 1935. The second one was Ann Richards, who served from 1991 to 1995.

Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton, making him the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate race since 1988.
