After that historic blue wave, you're probably wondering what comes next, with Democrats now being tasked with governing the major statewide offices here in Texas.

"Politics is the air we breathe, the water we drink, it's our schools," explained Traci Gibson, Harris County Democratic Party Chair.

HISD has been under state control for more than three years, led by Mike Morath, the state's education commissioner.

"On day one, I will fire Mike Morath," Governor-elect Gina Hinojosa said in her victory speech, garnering huge applause.

Hinojosa could actually appoint a new education commissioner in January, because Morath's term expires right before she takes office.

As governor, Hinojosa will be able to appoint leaders of some of the state's most powerful agencies and the boards that oversee the state's universities.

"Public education is about to change; that is a huge issue, a huge topic for a lot of us statewide," Gibson explained. "Vikki Goodwin told you that she's going to legalize marijuana; that's something that we're excited about."

As the state's new lieutenant governor, Goodwin will preside over the Texas Senate, wielding power over which bills are considered.

The state's legislature meets on Jan. 12.

But Texas' new governor and lieutenant governor will face something their predecessors never had to face: a divided legislature.

For the first time in more than 20 years, Democrats are set to control the state House.

Republicans are expected to keep control over the state Senate, which means they would have to be on board to pass any new laws involving issues discussed during the election, like abortion, gambling, and yes, marijuana.

And don't forget: Republicans still have two months left with total control. Some are already talking about passing new laws to restrict future power.
