After Democrats have good night nationally & in Missouri, voters say they want results
ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Tuesday night’s election results are poised to have implications nationally and in Missouri.
In Missouri, Republicans still control state government, but their grip has been weakened.
Nationally, Democrats will have total control of Congress, and that could grow as some races have not yet been called.
Folks around St. Louis say they want federal lawmakers to actually get things done.
“I just got real tired of everything that’s been going on in Washington DC,” said Jan Majers.
Majers, a resident of St. Louis County, wants change and is ecstatic with Tuesday night’s election results.
Now, she has real priorities she wants to see get done in D.C.
“Definitely against the war, we should have never been in it, so if they can stop the war,” said Majers.
Democrats will have full control of the House and Senate after dozens of upsets across the country.
Locally, that was highlighted by Democrat Fred Wellman defeating seven-term Congresswoman Ann Wagner.
“I hope they’ll make some improvements on things like affordability,” said Sara Galiti in St Charles.
In speaking to voters in St. Louis and St. Charles counties, some tell First Alert 4 they want Congress to stop partisan wars.
“Get the business of the country done and stop the infighting between the parties,” said Jeri, of St Louis County.
Some Democratic lawmakers have mentioned potentially beginning impeachment proceedings.
Most folks we spoke to believe Democrats should pass measures to make their lives easier before any type of impeachment.
“I’m not a Trump fan either, but I don’t think that that should be their first priority,” said Galiti.
And some, like Majers, hope Democrats can walk and chew gum at the same time, focusing on kitchen-table issues and corruption.
“They’re going to have to try because they only got two years to prove themselves,” said Majers.
And at a local level, Democrats flipped 16 seats in the Missouri House and two Missouri Senate seats, with multiple races still too close to call.
We also saw Amendment 3, which would have largely banned abortion and transgender health care for minors, fail.
State Rep. Elizabeth Fuchs says now, both parties need to compromise to bring down high prices.
“It’s not because trans kids healthcare, it’s not because people have access to abortion, so these things are distractions from actual good governance,” said Fuchs, a Democrat from St Louis City.
A few people off camera were not so happy with the election results, with one woman in west St Louis County telling First Alert 4 she was appalled.
A new CBS News exit poll finds most voters are unhappy with the condition of the national economy. 75 percent say the economy is “not good,” while just 25 percent rate it as “good.”
