SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is finalizing an agreement to sell one of its chapels in Rose Park, where two people were killed outside of a funeral service earlier this year.

On Jan. 7, police said a gang-related shooting broke out in the parking lot behind the chapel near the intersection of Redwood Road and 700 North.

Two people were killed and several others were injured in the shooting. At the time, neighbors said the incident greatly impacted the community.

"This should never have happened," Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall said in the hours after the shooting. "It should not have happened outside a place of worship; it should not have happened at a celebration of life."

County records show it is not a done deal, but the church is rumored to be selling the property to local home developer, Garbett Homes, for $5 million.

A church spokesperson told KSL it is selling the building because it is 46 years old, which records from the Salt Lake County Assessor's Office confirm.
