Raiders release early-season breakout star receiver

The Las Vegas Raiders have released wide receiver Cody White.

White was an early-season star for the Raiders, who became a fan favorite when he caught three touchdown passes during a two-game stretch early in the season.

The 27-year-old scored twice against the Los Angeles Chargers and once against the New Orleans Saints, finding the end zone on all three receptions during that stretch.

He has just one catch for four yards on three targets the past three weeks combined.

White’s release opened a roster spot for tight end Carter Runyon, who has been activated from injured reserve for a foot injury suffered during training camp.

White was off to a blistering start compared to his earlier seasons. He came to the Raiders this offseason as a special teams player who had just 11 catches in his career for 169 yards and one touchdown over parts of five seasons. Not only did he eclipse his career highs in receptions and yards, the Michigan State native also chased down Miami returner Jaylen Wright on a kickoff return in the opener to save a touchdown.

It’s possible he could be re-signed to the practice squad.
