Sen. Heinrich stresses need for Democrats to focus on affordability with control of Congress
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M — U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich told KOB 4 on Wednesday that he believed Democrats major victories on Tuesday night were tied to dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump’s performance.
Specifically, Heinrich says he believes the president reversed course on his promises.
“It’s important to realize that the reason this wave of election happened is because the president who campaigned on affordability did so many things that just made people’s economic lives so much harder. So, his war in Iran, the trade wars and the tariffs, taking people’s health care and making it more expensive. Like they felt like he campaigned on the right things and then he governed in exactly the opposite direction,” said Heinrich.
Heinrich said last night’s results are “not an endorsement” of the Democratic party but rather an opportunity.
Heinrich stressed that he believed Democrats should work on affordability through lowering health care, energy and grocery costs, although he pointed to difficulties with trying to pass democratic-led legislation with President Trump still in office.
On the Iran war, Heinrich said he believed Democrats will use “every tool we can,” to end the conflict. Heinrich noted that ending the war would not be easy, pointing to a lengthy process in Iraq.
