What to do in Colorado this week: Loud Women at the Fox Theatre in Boulder

This weekend, the LOUD WOMEN Festival puts the spotlight on female performers in Boulder, the Pueblo Film Festival screens an international lineup, Sundance Film Festival has free tickets up for grabs and museums in Denver are nixing admission.

Nov. 5-11

LOUD WOMEN festival. London was supposed to be their last gig. Boulder-based punk band Diva Cup, formed in the University of Colorado radio station basement, was “a college band,” Maxx Goodman, the band’s guitarist, said. “It was the natural thing. College was ending, people were thinking about other places to go and use their degree and all that.”

They booked a show in London at LOUD WOMEN Fest, produced by an international music organization of the same name that showcases female and femme musicians through festivals, radio shows, record compilations and a digital zine.

Plans changed. Goodman leaves Boulder in about a week’s time, moving to New York City to meet up with her bandmates and continue making music together. But not before she brings LOUD WOMEN to Colorado on Saturday at the Fox Theatre in Boulder.

“Boulder is a little bit of a weird music market, it’s so transitional because of the college,” Goodman said. “So bands are always forming and disappearing.” She hopes that her parting gift to the city, a full day of female-forward punk shows, will bring together “likeminded people to meet each other in the flesh.”

The festival starts at 4 p.m. Saturday and will feature 10 bands hand-selected by Goodman and a small crew of musicians. “It’ll be rowdy,” Goodman said, on what to expect of the evening. “It’ll be high energy. Fun. It’s a mix of local and not local bands. The hope is that you find new bands that you like and then keep following them.”
