The U.S. Embassy in France issued an urgent security alert for Americans, warning travelers to prepare for severe disruptions, possible curfews and the potential for violence as a nationwide strike threatens to bring much of the country to a standstill Thursday, Nov. 5.

Dig deeper:

The multi-sector walkout is expected to disrupt public transportation, schools and health care services. Authorities also warned that recent demonstrations have involved property damage and looting.

France’s four largest railway unions are participating in the strike, raising concerns that unauthorized protests could spread beyond designated routes through the weekend.

Local officials have begun implementing curfews on short notice in some areas, restricting movement and access to public landmarks in major areas, including Paris and surrounding neighborhoods.

Unions are demanding higher wages, improved working conditions and increased funding for public services, according to reports.

Travelers should expect disruptions to trains and other forms of public transportation as demonstrations take place across France.

The embassy advised Americans to avoid protests and large gatherings, noting that recent demonstrations have become violent and involved property damage and looting.

Fox News Digital reached out to the U.S. Embassy for comment and additional details.

The latest warning follows weeks of unrest that created problems for travelers in Paris and other parts of France.

Clashes erupted in Paris as a mass march drew to a close Saturday, with more than 400,000 people rallying across France over school funding and soaring living costs in a fresh challenge to President Emmanuel Macron. Police made nearly 1,000 arrests, the government said.

The backstory:

Violent demonstrations in October led to localized curfews in several cities. Riot police also used tear gas near Paris’ Place de la République as clashes broke out, Fox News Digital previously reported.

The unrest affected several of France’s best-known tourist attractions.

The Louvre was forced to close earlier in October after protesters blocked its entrances. Travelers were also advised to avoid common demonstration sites, including Place de la République, Place de la Bastille and Place de la Nation, Fox News Digital reported.

Why you should care:

Several major Paris museums, including the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Picasso Museum and the Grand Palais, later closed as authorities prepared for additional demonstrations.

French officials deployed thousands of law enforcement officers and redirected demonstrations away from central Paris after earlier unrest left businesses across France damaged or looted, Fox News Digital reported.

The U.S. Embassy warned that protest routes could change and that gatherings could occur outside areas approved by authorities.

Localized curfews may also remain in effect in parts of France, including Paris, and could be imposed with little notice.

Americans in France are advised to avoid demonstrations, monitor local news and check for transportation changes before traveling.
