911 calls, bodycam video capture aftermath of deadly shooting at Tampa office complex
New body camera footage from Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies shows the moments following Wednesday’s shooting at the Citibank Center business complex in the Tampa area.
Two people were killed, including the suspect, and four others were injured during the gunfire at the campus near East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Interstate 75. The identities of the victims and the gunman have not been released.
Authorities said they responded at around 12:12 p.m. after receiving multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire.
The attack sent workers scrambling as the suspect crashed his car among outdoor tables where people were eating lunch, then started shooting, said Chief Deputy Frank Losat of the sheriff’s office. More than 3,200 people were at the complex when the attack occurred.
The gunman fatally shot the woman before a security guard confronted him in a cafeteria, Losat said. The guard and the gunman exchanged fire, and the guard killed him, Losat said.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister described the incident as an attack in which the suspect intended to kill as many people as possible.
Bodycam video
The footage shows a deputy running toward the scene of the shooting, where he encountered a silver sedan that authorities said had crashed through several security fences, driven across a grassy area and ended up inside a fenced-off section of the complex.
The deputy continued toward the cafeteria as people could be heard shouting that the suspect was there and may have been down.
According to the sheriff’s office, an armed Citibank security guard confronted the suspect inside the cafeteria and shot him.
“Was there a potential for further violence? Absolutely," Losat told a news conference. "So kudos to that security guard.”
The suspect was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
Four people hospitalized
Losat said four other people were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. He didn't know whether any of them had been shot or struck by the gunman's vehicle.
Sheriff's deputies began arriving at the campus within a minute of the first 911 call, Losat said. The response was huge, with more than 360 deputies — many in tactical gear — rushing to the scene.
Those deputies spent 2 1/2 hours searching and clearing the building where the shootings occurred plus adjacent office buildings, Losat said.
Radio traffic on Broadcastify.com from responding officers described an exhaustive floor-by-floor search as people were found sheltering in locked rooms and closets, then carefully escorted from the buildings and parking garage.
Citigroup said in a statement that it was “aware of an incident” at the complex and was cooperating with authorities.
Sheriff Chronister praised the actions of the complex’s security team and the quick response of law enforcement officers, saying they prevented the gunman from causing further harm.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine a motive for the attack and whether there was any connection between the suspect and the person who was killed.
