A person died after crashing an empty ambulance at a business park in West Boylston, Massachusetts, on Sunday night, officials said.
The ambulance is believed to have been taken by a patient, according to the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office. No one else was in the vehicle at the scene of the crash, on Century Drive in West Boylston.
Footage from the scene showed an ambulance that had crashed into a large construction container, about half a mile into West Boylston.
The ambulance was taken from the Hospital for Behavioral Medicine. A representative for the facility referred questions to Worcester police; the agency confirmed a Coastal Medical Transportation Systems ambulance was stolen by a patient about 8:07 p.m. and crashed in West Boylston, with no one else hurt.
One person was found at the scene with life-threatening injuries, according to the West Boylston Fire Department. The person was rushed to a local trauma center, and the ambulance’s vehicle sensor system is what alerted officials to the crash.
Coastal’s CEO said in a statement that, “out of respect for patient privacy and the ongoing investigation, we are not able to share further details about the individuals involved or the circumstances of the incident at this time.”
The man who died was identified as Stephen Fraga, 45, of Mendon.
