The National Weather Service said a large, north-northwest swell is rising quickly this morning and is expected to peak well above the advisory level today before dropping Friday.
Surf of 14 to 20 feet is expected along north shores, while surf of 10 to 15 feet is expected along west shores.
The advisory covers the north and west shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai, and the north shores of Maui.
The Kauai Ocean Safety Bureau advises against swimming or other water activities at Ke‘e, Ha‘ena and Wanini beaches today due to the high surf and strong currents. At Hanalei Bay, swimming is permitted only near the Hanalei Pavilion lifeguard tower or Hanalei Pier.
Officials warn that strong breaking waves and powerful currents will make swimming dangerous.
