St. Louis residents to receive letters about lead service lines

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - St. Louis residents will soon receive letters in the mail asking them to check whether they have lead service lines.

First phase underway

The city is in the first phase of work to mitigate lead service lines.

City officials are asking residents to identify their service lines and self-test to see if the lines are lead.

Reporting results

Residents then need to report the results on the city’s website. The city said it uses the reports to keep an inventory of how many lead service lines there are.

Homeowner responsibility and financial help

The homeowner is responsible for the water service line.

Grant funds will be available for those who need help. The city said that to apply and receive help, residents need to know the number of service lines that need to be replaced.

Free water testing kits

Residents who want to test their water for lead can pick up a free testing kit at the city’s Water Division office on Kingshighway.
