Sheryl Williams Stapleton wants to delay sentencing
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Former state lawmaker Sheryl Williams Stapleton wants to delay her federal sentencing by about two months after a jury convicted her on more than 30 counts.
Stapleton had been scheduled for sentencing next month, but her legal team asked a judge to move it back because of conflicts with other cases.
Federal prosecutors agreed to the request.
A federal jury convicted Stapleton of fraud and money laundering earlier this year. She faces more than 500 years in prison after the federal verdict.
Prosecutors said Stapleton used her position as head of career and technical education at Albuquerque Public Schools to send large amounts of money to her longtime friend Joseph Johnson’s company, Robotics Learning Company.
Prosecutors said Johnson then sent Stapleton blank checks and she used them for her own benefit.
In a separate state case, a plea deal reduced her possible state sentence from 21 years to 10 and a half years. The agreement calls for at least 10 and a half years in prison and allows that time to run at the same time as any federal prison sentence.
