Weekend cold front brings chilly mornings

NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - A welcome cooldown is on the way as a cold front moves through tonight, setting the stage for a pleasant weekend with cooler temperatures and mostly dry weather.

After highs in the upper 70s Friday, temperatures will drop into the low 70s to upper 60s Saturday and Sunday.

The front will push through overnight into Saturday morning, bringing increasing northerly winds and a shot of drier air. The cooler air will take some time to settle in, but its effects will become more noticeable by Sunday morning.

The biggest question mark in the weekend forecast will be cloud coverage. Thicker clouds could move across the area, limiting sunshine at times.

A system passing to our west will help increase mid- and upper-level clouds into early next week, but rain chances will remain very low.

Cooler afternoons will also mean chilly nights. Temperatures are expected to fall into the 40s each night into next week north of the lake, while areas south of the lake will generally see lows in the 50s.

Cold front brings chilly air for the weekend

Sunday morning could bring the coldest temperatures the region has experienced in a couple of weeks, with lows in the low 40s across the northern half of the area and low to mid-50s south of the lake.

Despite the lack of rain, dry conditions will remain a concern. Lingering severe drought, particularly along and west of Interstate 55, combined with the arrival of drier air, will increase fire weather concerns by Sunday.

Winds are expected to weaken Sunday and Monday, helping keep conditions below critical fire weather thresholds. Red flag warnings are not anticipated at this time. However, residents in areas under burn bans should continue to avoid outdoor burning.

Looking ahead, temperatures should remain on the cooler side into early next week. Another weather system could bring additional cloud coverage, but rain chances will stay below 10%, mainly near the coast.

There are also signs that a more active pattern could develop later next week, potentially bringing additional cold fronts into the region by next weekend. How strong those fronts will be and how much cooler they could make temperatures remains uncertain.

For now, enjoy the cooler, mostly dry weekend ahead!
