Bicyclist, 18, critically hurt in Kalihi city bus collision
An 18-year-old male bicyclist is in critical condition after being struck by a city bus early this morning on Kamehameha Highway in Kalihi.
Honolulu Police Department detectives reported that the 64-year-old male bus operator was driving eastbound on Kamehameha Highway carrying 10 passengers around 3 a.m. when the teen bicyclist, traveling on the westbound sidewalk, entered the roadway directly into the path of the bus near Laumaka Street.
The collision ejected the 18-year-old onto the roadway. Honolulu Emergency Medical Services paramedics transported him to an area hospital in critical condition.
Police said the teenager was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The 64-year-old bus operator and all 10 passengers remained at the scene and were uninjured.
Investigators noted that speed, drugs or alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in the collision. The investigation remains ongoing.
