HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Houston Airports announced multiple changes coming to George Bush Intercontinental Airport, including a proposed redevelopment of its cellphone waiting lot.
In a release, Houston Airports officials said the proposal includes redesigning the lot along John F. Kennedy Boulevard, along with a fuel station, electric vehicle chargers, a convenience store, public restrooms, and quick-service restaurants.
Another part of the incoming changes to IAH includes a 183-acre expansion to the East Cargo area, officials said. The expansion would allow businesses and tenants to build warehouses, parking lots, and other facilities, Houston Airports said, adding that it would "support Houston’s energy, aerospace, biotechnology and logistics industries." Houston Airports said it expects to receive redevelopment proposals in early 2027.
Airport officials also announced that IAH will receive Global Entry Walk-Through technology in December. According to the release, U.S. Customs and Border Protection confirmed the Houston airport will be one of eight to receive the technology. Officials explained that it will let eligible Global Entry members continue walking through the processing area while facial cameras verify their identities, rather than stopping at a kiosk.
Officials said that CBP is currently piloting the technology, adding that the agency already uses facial recognition and that the new technology is designed to expedite the customs process.
