Bodycam shows paramedics transporting Perez Hilton after mental health crisis
Newly released body camera footage shows blood smeared on the walls of Perez Hilton's Miami-Dade home as first responders transported the celebrity blogger to the hospital after he engaged in self-harm during a livestream back in August.
The bodycam from the night of Aug. 4 shows paramedics preparing a stretcher on the porch. An unidentified woman stands in view, in distress, and someone off-camera tells her Hilton is getting psychological help.
Then the paramedics place Hilton, who is blurred in the footage, on the stretcher. He's then loaded into an ambulance and taken away.
What happened to Perez Hilton?
Miami-Dade Sheriff's deputies responded to his home on Aug. 4 after reports emerged that the single father of three was livestreaming self-harm.
Hilton's sister reported that she found him naked, bloody and cutting himself with a box cutter, authorities said.
The video, which was streamed on TikTok before the platform pulled it, appeared to show Hilton covered in blood, with visible cuts and holding what appeared to be a knife. Viewers pleaded with him and asked for his phone number so they could alert authorities.
He was hospitalized and taken for a mental health evaluation, also known as a Baker Act.
How is Perez Hilton doing today?
Three months after the incident, Hilton's family said in a statement this week that he had transitioned to a partial hospitalization program in October. He's still receiving mental health care and support, staying in supportive housing, and has been able to spend time with his family during approved visits.
However, his family is still unsure when Hilton will be returning home.
"This entire experience has been a learning process for our family. Like many people who have never been through something like this, we didn’t fully understand just how much time, care, and support recovery from a serious mental health crisis can require," the statement read. "Through conversations with others who have been through similar situations, we’ve come to understand that getting through the initial crisis is only the beginning. There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline, and we’re learning the importance of taking things one step at a time."
His website resumed posting weeks after the incident.
Who is Perez Hilton?
Hilton, 48, became famous in the early 2000s for publicizing and sometimes belittling celebrities who made public gaffes or found themselves in legal trouble. His brand of Hollywood gossip mixed with occasionally mean-spirited commentary made him an instant online sensation but also contributed to his reputation as a toxic, if amusing, personality.
In 2010, he apologized for participating in bullying behavior, and recently moved with his three kids to Miami from their home in Las Vegas.
