AUSTIN, Texas (KTRK) -- Texas state Rep. Senfronia Thompson announced on Friday afternoon that she has enough member votes to become the Speaker of the House.
If elected in January, Rep. Thompson would be Texas's first Black and first female House Speaker.
Thompson is a Democrat representing Texas House District 141 in Houston.
In a press conference in Austin on Friday, she will work with members from both parties, including the Republican majority in the Texas Senate.
"It's going to take all of us working together — the expertise of the Republicans and the expertise of the Democrats, working as a unit to get the things done for this state," Thompson said.
The announcement comes after Tuesday's midterm election saw Democrats winning multiple statewide and local elections based on projections, including governor-elect Gina Hinojosa and the majority of the Texas House legislature.
