As Golden Knights search for offense, goalies have stepped up
In a perfect world, the Vegas Golden Knights would like to score more goals while their goaltenders are playing this well.
It’s been a near-split in starts between Adin Hill and Carter Hart as the first quarter pole of the season draws close. Hart has seen 10 starts, while Hill has eight.
The Knights knew as far back as July that if they were to have any semblance of success, they’d need both goaltenders to deliver. Especially on nights where the offense isn’t there.
That’s been the case for the past eight games, with the Knights scoring 18 goals and scoring more than three just one time.
But in that same breath, the Knights have gotten the necessary goaltending to earn points in five of their past six games.
Take out the six goals allowed each by Hart against Tampa Bay on Oct. 20 and Hill on Oct. 22. In the last six games, the Knights have allowed 13 goals.
Hart and Hill are posting save percentages of .915 or better. Hart, despite two overtime losses, is at a .932 while holding a 1.62 goals-against average following Thursday’s 2-1 win over Detroit.
At five-on-five, Hart has been even better — a .940 save percentage and 1.21 GAA, according to Natural Stat Trick. Hart has saved 1.7 goals above expected, according to MoneyPuck.
Hill has allowed six goals at five-on-five in his three starts, but has given up seven total and carries a .915 save percentage.
“We just stuck with it and just found a way,” Hart said Thursday. “That’s what it’s about in this league is finding different ways to win. It’s not always going to be pretty. It’s not always going to be perfect.”
The biggest question heading into the season was the goaltending and if Hill, in particular, could return to form.
Coming off the worst season of his career, and Hart being the full-time starter during the Knights’ run to the Stanley Cup Final, Hill had to prove he could stay healthy and deliver.
So far he’s been able to do that.
“I feel good about my game right now,” Hill said Oct. 28. “Just keep trying to work on everything in practice and stay dialed in and be ready for the next one.”
There’s going to come a point where coach Ryan Craig, in conjunction with goaltending director Sean Burke, will need to decide on a No. 1 option.
By way of two more starts, it would seem Hart has that edge. There’s still five months to decide on that.
Hart and Hill have delivered during the Knights’ four-game road trip with points in the first three games. They’ll get two days off before a Sunday matinee in Buffalo.
There was a point where the goaltending was considered a weakness. So far, it’s the reason why the Knights have been able to correct course after a rough stretch before the road trip.
